The US dollar will continue to trend lower, which implies that foreign markets will outperform US assets, advises Jim Masturzo, CIO for multi-asset strategies at Research Affiliates. “Across a broad set of 14 asset classes since 1967 (where data is available), Research Affiliates has examined the historical relationship between the U.S. dollar’s movement (rising or falling) and each asset class’s return profile. Our research concludes that in a weakening dollar scenario, unhedged foreign stocks and bonds not only typically outperformed, but appeared to be the only statistically reliable relative relationship.”
